The Award winning development on Digby Road, Hackney by Network Housing Group is built directly over the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. Manhire Associates carefully designed the piled raft foundations supporting the 13 storey tower to limit deformations of the tunnel linings below, and technical approval for the proposals was granted in September 2009. The ground floor contains commercial space and with 98 affordable apartments over the upper floors.
The elevations are faceted with terracotta tiles to accentuate the ‘folds’. The green roofs are also folded and together with a sloping green wall, the development provides a habitat for native flora and fauna. A 20% renewable energy target is achieved using a biomass boiler in a community heating scheme and excellent transport links enable provision of a city car club. The scheme was designed to Lifetime Homes and was shortlisted for a 2009 Housing Design Award.
