Finishing touches to Phase 1 of Camden’s Abbey Road development ….

Wates are putting the finishing touches to the first phase of the development on Abbey Road and Belsize Road in Camden.

The Abbey Area re-development which captures the Abbey Co-op Estate, was master-planned by PTE Architects for the London Borough of Camden. 240 apartments, 15 mews houses together with over 15000 sq ft of commercial space, a school, a community centre and a health centre are being built in 3 phases.

6 buildings ranging from 6 to 14 storeys over a basement car park form the first phase of the development on a confined site next to Network Rail and the West Coast main line.  A 1600mm diameter trunk sewer runs across the site and this together with the presence of existing foundations, Japanese Knotweed and existing bridge abutments were just some of the challenges overcome.

Working closely with the PTE and the contractor, Manhire Associates developed engineering proposals for a £4M Enabling Works Package which mitigated risks in the ground as well as optimising the pile design.
