   Bristol Airport's First Hotel
Aug 11
Manhire Associates have recently completed the site investigation for Bristol Airport's first hotel. Planning permission was granted in January 2001 for the 251 bed development next to the Terminal Building.
The building is arranged in two wings and is founded on 'Karstic' limestone. Manhire Associates Geo-Environmental team undertook investigations on site to assess risks in the ground, particularly 'swallow' holes or 'di-solution features'. Investigations were sequenced to avoid disruption to the Airport and Manhire Associates worked closely with the Airport team. The Lynxs development, managed by L'Etoile Developments is designed by EPR as project architects with Applied Energy as Mechanical and Electrical engineers and Edmond Shipway as Cost Consultants.

Digby Road wins Estates Gazette Green Award

The 13 storey £21 million regeneration includes many innovative features such as green sloping roofs and a 6 storey living green wall, understood to be the largest in Europe.

The ‘brown field’ development posed many technical challenges - as well as the green roofs and walls and the complex geometry of the elevations, the building is constructed directly over the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) and next to surface railway lines and sewers. Manhire Associates successfully engineered the piled raft foundations so as not to overstress the live CTRL tunnels just 25m below the building.
