Novotel, Liverpool, Development

Novotel, Liverpool

The development is part of the Paradise Street development, which comprises 48 acres of urban regeneration due for completion in 2008, the year that Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture. The site is situated on Hanover Street, and provides 209 hotel rooms, conference and meeting room facilities as well as a spa and leisure centre.

The building is a 12 storey reinforced concrete frame with a single level basement. The ground conditions are variable, with sandstones and existing foundations and brick vaults. Columns are supported on a combination of pad footings, rock anchors and contiguous piles. The ground levels vary and a ‘hybrid’ kingpost/contiguous system was devised to achieve the concrete profiles and to prop the works whilst maintaining reasonable working access. The contiguous piling retains adjacent buildings founded at high level at the rear of the site.
